The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. They believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Alateen is part of the Al-Anon fellowship and is for young people, aged twelve to seventeen (inclusive), who are affected by a problem drinker. The helpline is open every day, 10.00am-10.00pm (low-call rate).

Befrienders Worldwide

Befrienders Worldwide work to provide emotional support, and reduce suicide by listening to people who are in distress. Their philosophy is that they don't judge them or tell them what to do - they listen. On their site you can find links and contact details to numerous organisations around the world. A helpline for young men who are depressed or suicidal. It is staffed by trained counsellors who offer advice, guidance and information. Calls are free (from landlines), confidential and anonymous. Available Saturday to Tuesday: 5pm - Midnight, every week of the year. Professions will be available to talk through problems, listen, and offer information and advice. Translation facilities are available on request and the minicom number is 0800 027 29 82.

Catch-A-Fiya is a survivor controlled forum for mental health system survivors, funded by the Big Lottery Fund to facilitate positive change for survivors. Their primary purpose is to establish and maintain contact with survivors from BME communities and support them to learn, teach and grow.

PACE is committed to providing a low cost counselling service to lesbian and gay men. There is a choice of counsellor and counselling is offered in languages other than English. Anyone who is lesbian or gay, or who might be questioning their sexuality, can access PACE, providing that their income does not exceed £16,000 per annum. (This does not apply to the specialist HIV prevention counselling). If your annual income is above £16,000, PACE can refer you to a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist from their Referral Network.

The Samaritans can also assist you with emotional support via e-mail (see above). Samaritans have a philosophy of listening in total confidence and without judgment, whatever your situation and will delete your email after 30 days. Currently they are only able to provide an English-speaking service but provide a link to Befrienders Worldwide, an international collection of listening organisations (see below).

SANEline is a national out-of-hours telephone helpline offering emotional support and information for people affected by mental health problems. Helpline provides information and support to anyone affected by a mental health problem. Gives callers options for action, and puts them in touch with available sources of help and support. Also offers emotional and crisis support to people experiencing mental health problems, their families/carers and friends. If your first language is not English, Saneline can provide interpreters via the Language Line translation service.
