MIND is a leading mental health charity in the UK. You can ring MIND from anywhere in the country for the cost of a local call. The MindinfoLine is open Mondays to Fridays 9:15am to 5:15pm. Deaf or speech impaired enquirers can contact us on the same number (if you are using BT Textdirect add the prefix 18001). Mind use Language Line, the telephone translation and interpreting service with access to more than 100 languages. The service is run by a dedicated team of specialists, responding to more than 20,000 enquiries a year. Topics range from types of mental distress, where to get help and drug treatments, to alternative therapies. Links to around 200 local MIND associations throughout England and Wales. Rethink is a leading mental health charity that works to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life. Their website provides information about mental illness and many other topics for service users and carers. Links to support groups throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Rethink has a number of support groups specifically for people from minority ethnic communities.

 

It aslo has a culturally sensitive listening and information service for the Asian community in Kent, East Sussex, and Bexley. The service is for anyone affected by mental health issues - whether they are service users, carers or friends. Callers may speak to us in Asian languages (Gujarati, Punjabi, Hindu, and Urdu) or English.

Aware Defeat Depression is a voluntary organisation dedicated to providing support and information for all those affected by depressive illnesses across Northern Ireland. Aware recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and has offices in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry. Beat is a national charity based in the UK providing information, help and support for people affected by eating disorders and, in particular, anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Also provides information for professionals. The Helpline is aimed at people over 18 who wish to talk about eating disorders and to obtain information about help available in their locality. The purpose of the helpline (contact details above) is to provide a confidential service including: a listening ear; non-judgmental response; information about eating disorders; information about help available. Depression Alliance is a leading UK charity for people affected by depression. In their experience, depression need not be feared. They provide publications, a written advisory service offering support and understanding, self help groups across the UK, a newsletter, as well as workshops and conferences. They also run a pen-friend scheme and an online-forum. Depression Alliance Scotland strive to ensure that those affected by depression and their carers are provided with the information, support, understanding and care needed for the best quality of life, see http://www.dascot.org/index.html. MDF The BiPolar Organisation is a user-led charity working to enable people affected by bipolar disorder (manic depression) to take control of their lives. Helps people with manic depression, their relatives, friends and others who care, and educates the public and caring professions about manic depression. They publish a journal (Pendulum) for members which is produced by people who have the condition and their families and friends. On their site you can find a range of leaflets, links to a network of self-help groups around the UK and online discussion group. They also offer a self-management training programme and legal advice.
