Just wondering what to do, been recently perscribed Citalopram 20 mg but a bit nervous about taking them as I've heard of the fairly lengthy list of common side effects that can occur whilst taking these tablets. Also very worried about the side effect of increased depressive mood and thoughts of suicide. Anyone out there who is currently taking this or know of Citalopram and could give me advice or help clarify my concerns?

Hi, I've been on Citalopram now for nearly 4 years as a result of post natal depression bringing underlying depression to a head. I started on 20mg and experienced some very mild side effect symptons like nausea, dizziness and headaches - but I must stress, these were mild and only lasted a week or so. Since then, this drug has kept my mood very stable. I am now in my second period of taking 40mg after stressful situations have lowered my mood further. Again mild side effects occured for a few days during increase and decrease of dosage. In the past, I have suffered thoughts of suicide but this drug has never caused me any such problems. Hope this helps.

Hi, There seems to be a lot of support for this drug. I have to admit it has really helped me. I was put on a full dose of citalopram after experiencing an depressive episod. Without this drug I would not have been able to recover, of that I am sure. I didn't experience and still dont experience any side effects. Many friends of mine have taken anti depressants but have been horrified to find that they lose their lebido and can no longer orgasm. This was not the case for me with Citalopram. It sorted out my anxiety disorder within a very short time which gave me the strength to face therapy and the world at large. Like any drug I think its best to get professional therapy as well. I can safely say that my life has been transformed thanks to a mix of CBT therapy and Citalopram. I personally can see no reason why I would not recommend to anyone else should their psychiatrist recommend it. I was put onto this drug during my depressive episode almost three years ago. I have not relapsed yet and I have been slowly reducing the dosage. If you are worried about suicidal thoughts and the threat of suicide the I for one completely understand. I was very suicidal during my spell in hospital. However, this was not the result of the medicine. I went to hospital before I was put onto CItalopram. My suicidal thoguhts ended soon after I was presribed with the drug. In any case I hope you ifnd a treatment that will help you :-)

I was prescibed Citalopram 20mg about 8 months ago. It has been very effective - more effective than anything I have taken for anxiety. I have not experienced any major side effects other than sexual dysfunction which did not last for long. I had previously been prescribed seroxat and amytriptylene and there were more side effects with them. Coming off seroxat was not good. I am still on Citalopram so do not know how easy it is to come off it.

After having tried several different medications to treat depression, each with different side effects, i was switched by my GP to Citalopram 20mg. I have now been taking it for a couple of years and have been fortunate not to have encountered any side-effects. When I began treatment i noticed an initial lowering of mood but that disappeared after 1-2 weeks, and since then my depression has been in remission.

Hi, I have taken Citralopram in the past, two lots and found it helped me no end. I was on quite an average dose (sorry can't remember if it was 20mg or not) to start with then as i felt better i lowered it to one every other day, then i eventually came off them gradually. It sounds to me that you are worrying about the side effects, i have to be honest and say i didnt notice any side effects, not that i can remember. I think that drug companies have a legal obligation to state all their findings, but what you really have to look at are the common ones and not the rare ones. If your doctor had prescribed these then maybe you should run through your thoughts with him/her? I have to say that they really helped me but i don't really want to be on antidepressants for the long term so worked to come off but you must do this gradually. Anyway, talk to your GP if you are worried but i think that side effects are really nothing to worry about and your mental health is more important. Good luck and hope i helped.
