Alex understood doctors were unsure whether to recommend surgery for heel fracture or not. He had a slight preference for surgery but random allocation seemed a good way to deal with the uncertainty.

Having a DVD as well as written information was really helpful. Alex did not feel much need to discuss it with anyone else before giving consent.

Alex wonders if he got faster access to diagnostic tests because he’d agreed to be in the trial, but he thinks the quality of care overall was no different.

It did not worry him that he might be allocated to have surgery – compared with other people around him on the ward his problems seemed minor and he was willing to help.

He doesn’t remember being told if he would receive the results. He asked to see a copy, but not everyone would want to.

TV programmes might raise awareness, but Alex thinks improving public understanding of medicine, science and maths is the first step. Clinical trials are a complex area.
