The autism spectrum incorporates a broad range of ability and many people on the spectrum are very successful at work. Other people may have difficulties at work and some people may remain unemployed. The people we talked with reflected these variations and we here discuss their experiences of work.

Some people had successful careers. Various factors had contributed to this success, including advanced abilities in subjects such as science or art, having the right kind of support such as parents nearby, or a boss who understood their needs. A focus and attention to detail had helped some in their working lives.

We asked people what they thought the causes of autism were, and this produced some interesting reflections.

Some thought it was genetic and they identified other family members they thought were definitely on the spectrum. A few people had children who were also on the spectrum or “had leanings in that direction”.

Education

Education

People looked back at their school days and talked about their experiences which were often before they had been diagnosed. They had attended a mix of mainstream schools, special schools, boarding school and private schools. One person was home schooled from the age of 13 [click here for his mother's story].

Many people did not enjoy school; they didn’t have many friends and several talked about being bullied. One man said “I was bullied a lot. Everyday actually. I think it was because I was slightly different and they thought ‘Oh he’s an easy target’”. Another talked about how he avoided bullying by staying in the background; “That was how I negotiated school, I suppose, I kept a pretty low profile. I was eccentric essentially.”

The autism spectrum incorporates a range of ability. Some people may have learning difficulties which can affect all aspects of life, from studying in school, to learning how to wash or make a meal. As with autism, people can have different 'degrees' of learning difficulty, so some will be able to live fairly independently - although they may need some support to achieve this - while others may require lifelong, specialist support. The people we spoke with reflected this range and here we look at how they managed their everyday lives.

Some people we talked with lived in residential homes or at home with their parents. Some lived in independent supported living with paid carers while others lead independent lives either in a relationship, with their family, or on their own.

Fears, anxieties and sensory disorders are common with autism. They vary with the severity of the autism and across people’s lives. People with autism may exhibit sensory hypersensitivity, being extremely sensitive to one or all stimuli, e.g. sight, sound, smell, touch or taste. Some parents told us that their children experienced fears, anxieties or sensory sensitivities; here we see that they were also significant in the lives of the adults we talked with.
