Chronic health issues

Welcome. Healthtalkonline, an award-winning charity website, lets you share in other people's experiences of health and illness. This information is based on qualitative research into patient experiences led by experts at the University of Oxford.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can have a wide range of causes and symptoms. We interviewed 47 people about their experiences of chronic pain.

Diabetes type 2

Diabetes type 2 occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin produced does not work properly (insulin resistance).  We interviewed 40 people about their experiences of diabetes type 2.

HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection attacks the body's immune system. We interviewed 50 people about their experiences of HIV infection.

Jewish health

We interviewed 40 people who are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, and have a health condition that has a higher than average prevalence among people from this population.  The genetic basis of some of these conditions, such as Tay Sachs and Familial Dysautonomia, has been identified, while others, such as Crohn’s disease and Factor 11 Deficiency have no identified genetic basis but are of a higher prevalence among Ashkenazi Jewish people. While at least 20 conditions have been found to be of particular relevance to people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, we anticipate that more disorders will be identified in the future.

Living with a urinary catheter

Urinary catheterisation is a medical procedure used to drain and collect urine from the bladder. We interviewed 36 people about their experiences of living in the community with a long-term indwelling urinary catheter. All of the people we interviewed had used an indwelling catheter for at least 3 months. Some had used a catheter for many years, others had one permanently. We also interviewed 4 carers about their experiences of caring for someone with a long-term indwelling catheter.
