Deepak had kidney disease from his early 30s and, later, had dialysis for two weeks. In 1995 he had a kidney transplant, aged 35. His new kidney took about ten days to start working properly, an extremely worrying time. Deepak is very well now.
Diana had a heart and lung transplant in 2002, aged 46. She had a lot of sickness for about four months and felt depressed. She started feeling better after about six months and, over eight years on, is very well.
Liz had a kidney transplant in 1990, aged 19. The donor was her mother. Both she and Liz recovered well. Liz went on to have two daughters and to become a professional musician. She is a professor of music at the conservatoire she studied at.
Harmanjit donated a kidney to her father in 2008, when she was 29. He was 68 at the time and faced the prospect of dialysis. Both of them recovered well. Harmanjit is now keen to raise awareness of kidney donation amongst British South Asians.
