Chris, a doctor, had always been interested in helping people. Everything he read led him to believe donating a kidney was the right thing for him to do. The risk to his own health was low.

Chris describes the various tests he had to have before getting approval to become a donor. These included blood tests, urine analyses, chest x-rays, a CT scan and psychological evaluation.

Chris went into hospital the night before the operation. The anaesthetist explained everything in detail, though Chris just wanted to get on and have the surgery. He spent three nights in hospital.

When Chris had an approximate date for surgery, he emailed his three children to let them know his plans. They responded positively. His wife stayed neutral, allowing him to make his own decisions.

Local people read about Chris’ donation and often asked him about it. His colleagues, though, said very little. This was quite difficult because donating a kidney was very important to him.

Chris received a letter from the recipient, via the nurse, telling him how ill he’d felt on dialysis and how well he felt now. Chris replied but did not feel the need for further contact.

Chris felt that age, occupation and having dependents can influence peoples’ decisions to donate. He thought a good time to donate a kidney would be between 60 and 70.
