Age at Diagnosis: 56
Background: Peter (aged 64) and Ann (aged 58) are a married couple, both retired teachers, with 2 adult children. Ethnic background/nationality: White British.

Brief outline:Peter was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) 8 years ago (1998). Symptoms progressed quickly at first, but now more slowly. His speech was severely affected, so he was interviewed through his wife Ann. His mobility is also affected.

At first they were told his symptoms did not fit the diagnostic criteria for MND. They were happy to leave it at that. Later PLS was diagnosed. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
They consulted a homeopath but decided not to follow the advice given. They don't believe in 'quirky things' which claim to stop the progress of MND. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
Peter goes to the gym to maintain upper body strength - he feels lucky he can afford it. He'd like to be able to do more exercising in water. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
A plan to have a paid carer fell through. They manage together and find their own solutions. Peter can't get to the toilet quickly; going often helps. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
Travelling abroad can be difficult to arrange but it's worth the trouble. PLS does not seem to be a problem for travel insurance. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
Everyone has to find their own way of coping. They both feel it is important to maintain their own interests. [Peter cannot speak much].
 
Their way of coping was to ignore the condition. It's only more recently they've admitted it to themselves. It helps that it is PLS. [Peter cannot speak much].
