Background: James is a retired carpenter/joiner, widowed. Ethnic background/nationality: White British.

Brief outline:James was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) 15 years ago (1991). His wife also had MND and died 3 years ago, 2 years after her diagnosis.

He can't understand why both he and his wife developed MND. He thought playing a lot of sport might have had something to with it in his case.
 
He is battling to get disabled parking spaces closer to public buildings but the council says they meet government guidelines. He finds a scooter more sociable than a car.
 
He was proud never to have had a day's unemployment. Realising he was not going to work again was hard to accept.
 
It was difficult to get advice about benefits. He was assessed for Disability Living Allowance by a doctor he'd never met, who told him not to play down his problems.
 
He's had a good life and he'd like his doctors to be able to help him end it quickly when the time comes. Many people who oppose assisted dying have no experience of MND.
