He woke in the morning feeling like he had slept awkwardly on his leg but the feeling did not pass and on trying to stand his leg and arm gave way.

At first he was frightened about the impact of the stroke but was reassured if a little surprised that he would be helped to do things for himself very quickly.

Found it hard to get help with personal care and using the toilet and said that although the nurses are great you have to leave your dignity at the hospital door.

Regrets not changing his lifestyle and attending check-ups following his heart attack and feels that this was the reason for his stroke.

He explained that as time went on his list of things he cannot do has got smaller and he hopes to eventually get back to decorating.

He was given a choice of what to work on in physiotherapy and had mainly focussed on walking rather than hand function which he later regretted.

When he came home for the weekend they moved his bed downstairs and he had to use a commode but he thought the visits home were fantastic.

He told the DVLA about his stroke and went for a test at a local assessment centre.

Has found very good information on the internet. Was surprised to find out how many people have strokes and that there is a geographical variation in waiting lists to see physiotherapists.

Was disappointed that the Different Strokes support group he attended was very focused on fund raising, but met someone at the group that he still sees regularly.
