Welcome. Healthtalkonline, an award-winning charity website, lets you share in other people's experiences of health and illness. This information is based on qualitative research into patient experiences led by experts at the University of Oxford.
Shared decision making
In recent years, shared decision making has been recognised as an important part of clinical consultations. Drawing on the health and illness experiences of people with thirty different health conditions, we have looked at what they said about their experience of decision making. We include those who have faced decisions in life-threatening illness and chronic conditions, as well as other health issues such as pregnancy and immunisation. We have also included the experiences of some relatives.
This study differed from our usual approach because, instead of collecting new material, we pulled together themes from our rich database of interviews previously collected by healthtalkonline researchers. The conditions have been drawn from Cancer, Nerves and brain, Dying and bereavement, Chronic health issues, Intensive care, Heart disease, Pregnancy and children, Autism and Later life.
