I am 79, thus outside the age range of the programme. But I was accepted without qualification. I have a heart condition requiring warfarin and my INR was reduced to an acceptable level before the procedure. I was fully conscious during the procedure which was uncomfortable and took longer than predicted, due, I believe to difficulty in removing polyps, and fixing clips over their sites to prevent bleeding. This was unsuccessful, as it is almost certain I was bleeding at the point I was discharged.
The centre where the procedure took place had no facilities for dealing with patients bleeding on discharge. I went home by car (30 minutes) and was immediately admitted to A+E of my local hospital, where I stayed for four days. Clumsy catheter isation resulted in an infection which took 3 antibiotics courses to cure.
It is certain that I would not have undergone the procedure had I known: insufficient sedation: the risk of bleeding/difficulty in stopping it:: that the centre had no faciliities for treating this condition. It seems that the possible blood in the faecal sample was due either to diet, or piles I suffered from many years ago. These could have been investigated and eliminated, so avoiding the need for this experience.
