Age at Diagnosis: 54
Background: Laurence works in a dairy farm, is married with two adult children. His mother had osteoporosis and his brother has the condition. He was thinking about early retirement or part-time work.

Brief outline:Diagnosed in 2003; was initially put on Didronel and then on Actonel and currently on weekly alendronic acid. He has doubts about the effectiveness of his medication. He suffers from severe back pain. Last DXA scan showed that he has three vertebral fractures. Recently he was referred to a consultant.

Despite having a maternal history of osteoporosis, Laurence’s wife was denied a DXA scan on the NHS because she was aged 55 years and hadn’t broken a bone.
 
Laurence doesn’t think that his one tablet a week treatment is helping because his back pain has got worse over the years. He has recently being referred to a consultant.
 
Laurence would like advice from his GP about whether to have physiotherapy and how much exercise to do.
 
Laurence’s pain in his back makes it hard some days to do his physically demanding job.
 
Laurence gave up smoking ten years ago on his doctor’s advice.
 
Laurence’s family is concerned that they might also develop osteoporosis and he wishes that people could see the amount of pain he experiences.
 
Laurence wants to keep working full time on the farm for as long as possible because of the income it gives and he enjoys it.
